Equipment Description
The Micro-Air podiatry drill features a powerful micromotor and nose cone with precision ball bearings. The integral vacuum system protects the user from adverse health effects of dust. Vacuum starts automatically when the handpiece is started.

Electronically controlled Variable Speed ensures optimal control when using small and large diameter burs. The Micro-Air is therefore useful in a wide range of procedures.

The direction of rotation is selectable from the front panel. With the right selection of bur and speed and with a light sweeping motion of the bur, the bur will do the work for you and overheat of the treatment area is prevented.
A built-in vacuum dust bag is conveniently replaceable from the front panel.

Lifting the handpiece out of its holder is easier when picked up close to the bur and tilted up and backward. This also prevents the bur from contacting the unit’s enclosure and bending of the bur shaft.

Care for your new drill consists of weekly cleaning of the bur entrance of the handpiece with the spiral cleaning drill provided. No disassembly is required. Once a year a very small amount of bearing grease can be applied underneath the black screw on the nose cone. This is the bur release mechanism. A flat blade screwdriver is required. The rotating parts (i.e. the internal ball bearings) are factory sealed and lubricated. After approximately 5 years the bearings in the nosecone may need replacement. The vacuum motor brushes and bearings are rated for 15 years of average use (with a dust bag always in place, no dust can reach the vacuum motor). These units are designed to be maintainable. This extends the useful life of the equipment since only worn parts have to be replaced. Your investment continues to work for you!

Detailed Operation and Service Instructions for Orthofex Micro Air

The Micro-Air is supplied “ready for use” with a handpiece comprised of micromotor and nose cone, speed controller/vacuum unit and a dust bag. A black rubber dust cap is provided which slides over the bur stem to reduce ingress of dust into the nose cone. A variety of burs is available on request.

Built-in units
Please ensure adequate ventilation (2″ free space on all sides of the unit) when placing the control unit in tight locations.

Cleaning and user maintenance
The handpiece and control unit are easy to clean with a damp (not wet) cloth and mild cleaning or disinfecting solution (NOT Cidex type liquids). Handpiece and nose cone should not be autoclaved or immersed in liquids. The dust diverter caps are autoclavable. The nose cone can be cleaned by removing the bur and inserting a pipe cleaner or spiral drill into the nose cone to remove any dust out of the chuck.

Dust bags should be replaced when they are 3/4 full. To open the dustbag compartment: turn one or both black knobs 90 to 180 degrees.

The Micro-Air has a safety shutdown should the bur suddenly come to a stop (e.g. when caught in a glove or clothing item). In that case, turn the handpiece off. After a 2 min. cooldown period, the handpiece will start again.

Connect the power cord and handpiece cable. Ensure that the vacuum tube is secured at the nose cone and inserted into the front of the control unit with a dustbag attached. Connect the optional footswitch to the front panel connector (left lower corner).
Always ensure that a bur is present in the nose cone before turning on the handpiece.
Now insert a bur – see “changing of burs”

  • Turn the speed control to LOW (full left).
  • Push the vacuum control switch to On or Off.
  • Push the main “ON” switch (indicated by a picture of a bur on the front panel) to turn the power on.
  • Flip the Left-Right toggle switch in the right-hand bottom corner of the front panel to either Left rotation or Right rotation. (Avoid the mid position!!)
  • With handpiece firmly in the hand (and bur tip in mid-air) turn the speed control knob up. The handpiece now turns.
  • If a footswitch is connected, press it now.

Starting and Stopping during a procedure:
Press and release footswitch.
Or: turn the main switch on and off
Or: turn speed control to the lowest point.

Stop the handpiece before changing the direction of rotation. Then select the direction of rotation of the bur from the front panel L-R toggle switch. Speed can be changed with handpiece running or stopped. Lower speed for larger diameter burs, higher speed for smaller diameter burs. Sanding cap burs must be operated below 6,000 RPM.

Changing of burs:
Stop the handpiece. Hold onto the nose cone/vacuum sleeve with one hand and turn the body of the micromotor to the left (anti-clockwise) until a slight bump is felt. Remove and insert a new bur and turn the body of the micromotor to the right until again past the bump. The rubber dust cap on the bur shaft should not contact the tip of the nosecone.
It is a good habit, after inserting a bur, to twist the bur with the fingers. When, over time, it becomes harder to turn the bur, it is an indication that the internals of the nose cone needs service, or that the dust cap has friction. Dust caps are not essential, though they do increase the life of the unit.
